There are many easy ways to prevent kidney disease. These simple steps can keep your kidneys healthy or, if you have kidney disease in your family, can often extend the life of your kidneys so that they work better and longer.

  • Drink plenty of fluid.  Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water (not artificial beverages like sodas) each day.  This is especially helpful in preventing kidney stones.
  • Prevent or treat diabetes and high blood pressure.  Get enough exercise (but first talk to your doctor before starting a new exercise schedule).  Don't smoke. Maintain a proper weight.  Keep good control of your blood sugar if you have diabetes.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet.
  • Treat wounds and infections.  Follow your health-care provider's instructions. Try to prevent infections by practicing good hygiene.
  • Limit exposure to heavy metals and toxic chemicals.  And avoid any unnecessary (over-the-counter) drug use.
